Current Work

In the Studio

The studio is my happy place.

Small Collages

I like to set myself daily projects to help me get into the studio on a regular basis. Collage is a perfect activity for this as it requires minimal setup and can be done in small blocks of time. I enjoy working in a small square format and experimenting with colours, textures and composition.

Most of my collage papers are made using a gel plate and acrylic paint, although occasionally hand painted paper finds its way into the mix. I add linear details and small pops of colour with chalk pencils and wax crayons.

Monotypes

Whether it is printing in colour on a gel plate or drawing into velvety black ink and printing on my small tabletop press, I love the directness of the monotype process. It is unpredictable, somewhat risky, but so very satisfying when you lift the paper and see what’s there.

Here is a small collection of prints inspired by my experience of drawing en plein air in different locations.

Paintings

When you live in the bush you spend a lot of time on the road observing the patterns, textures and colour of the landscape: how it changes from place to place and as the seasons pass. In recent years I’ve also had the opportunity to spend time in specific places, learning to listen, look and feel. The sketches, notes and photographs I make outside feed my studio practice. My paintings don’t represent specific scenes in a photographic way. Instead, I try to capture the essence of a place and how it feels to be there.
